LEGACIES (2015)
FOR WIND ENSEMBLE
This composition was commissioned by Dr. Dakeyan C. Graham and the King High School Wind Ensemble for a trip for them to perform at the prestigious Carnegie Hall in New York City.
‘Dre’ told me that he wanted a piece that could honor and depict the ups and downs of the King High School band program - from the glory of its marching bands during the early years, to the tumultuous times through director turnover and ultimately to a performance at one of the most notable concert venues in the world. It is from this concept that Legacies was born. Dre also wanted to pay tribute to each of the four band directors in King High School’s history, so one will notice a solo line of each of their primary instruments (flute, alto sax, trumpet and horn).
The performance by the King High School Wind Ensemble at Carnegie Hall in April 2016 is one that these students, staff and even myself will never forget. It is one that will undoubtedly be a strong part of the legacy that they leave behind that will be remembered for many years to come.
